Hardware

Know Your Aircraft Inside and Out

A professional drone pilot knows their equipment the way a pilot knows their aircraft. You should understand every component, its function, its failure modes, and how it interacts with the rest of the system.

  • Flight controller: the brain — processes sensor data and pilot inputs to maintain stability.
  • ESC (Electronic Speed Controller): translates flight controller commands into motor RPM.
  • IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit): accelerometers and gyroscopes that sense attitude and movement.
  • GPS/GLONASS module: positioning — requires clear sky view. Degraded near buildings and under tree canopy.
  • Barometer: altitude reference. Sensitive to pressure changes and wind gusts at the sensor port.
  • Obstacle avoidance sensors: infrared, ultrasonic, or visual. Each has range limits and blind spots.

Failure awareness

Know what happens when each component fails. GPS loss = ATTI mode. IMU failure = uncontrollable. ESC failure = motor stops. You cannot respond to what you do not understand.
