Airspace Basics

Why Airspace Matters for Drone Pilots

The FAA divides the sky into different classes of airspace — some controlled by air traffic control, some not. As a Part 107 pilot, knowing which airspace you're in determines whether you can fly freely or need authorization first.

  • Controlled airspace: Class B, C, D, and some Class E — ATC manages traffic here.
  • Uncontrolled airspace: Class G — no ATC services, often your best bet for drone operations.
  • Most Part 107 pilots fly in Class G most of the time. Authorization opens up the rest.
  • Flying in controlled airspace without authorization can result in enforcement action.

Test tip

The FAA exam frequently asks which airspace classes require authorization. The answer is always B, C, D, and surface Class E.
